The South Florida Veterinary Medical Association (SFVMA) was organized in the 1950's and became incorporated in 1965 with the focus to represent the veterinary profession within the Miami- Dade and Monroe Counties of South Florida. With the realization that only through organized veterinary medicine can a significant local, state and nationwide impact be made when issues relevant to veterinary medicine come to the forefront, the SFVMA strives to protect, promote and strengthen the profession.
The Association takes great pride in its diverse membership and in being one of the largest associations in the State of Florida. As the only local veterinary medical association in the State of Florida with a committee of continuing existence and a non-profit foundation (South Florida Veterinary Foundation), the SFVMA maintains a strong commitment to its mission to promote the advancement of veterinary medicine, animal health, public health and the human animal bond in South Florida through the use of scientific knowledge and skill.
Benefits to SFVMA members are numerous, including access to informational resources, opportunities for continuing education, opportunities for professional interaction, the exchange of ideas and networking, and access to channels of communication with regulatory agencies.
We welcome your participation to support the profession in your local community. If you are a veterinarian we invite you to become a member.
Welcome to our association!

PET HURRICANE DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
|
As we all prepare in the event of a hurricane, we may forget to prepare our pets for the possibility of a storm. The SFVMA is encouraging all pet owners to take a few minutes and prepare your pet. This means making sure you have enough food & water for your pet, as well as, making sure your pet has proper identification (ID tag and microchip). We also ask that you speak with your family veterinarian to discuss where your pet should go if your veterinarian’s clinic is closed and your pet needs care. Below is link to a list of SFVMA member emergency clinics that will be open during a hurricane or shortly after it has passed.
Please visit Miami-Dade County Animal Services website for additional details on pet disaster preparedness and pet friendly evacuation centers (which you will need to pre-register): www.miamidade.gov/animals/disaster_preparedness.asp

| The SFVF's Project Unleashed is in need of pet food |
|
Looking for an easy way to give back to our people & pet community?
The SFVF is hoping that you'll participate in our ongoing Project
Unleashed Pet Food Drive. With our next outreach just a few weeks
away, we could really use your help in gathering pet food donations.
We've found the easiest and best way to do this is to put a box in
your clinic's lobby for pet food donations. This way your clients can
simply bring in and donate pet food (both dog and cat food) on their
next visit to your office. It's preferable that dog food be dry and
not canned as our homeless community members often do not have access
to a can-opener which is required for most dog food cans. However, wet
dog food is welcome as long as the can has a pull tab for easy opening.
The pet food is delivered to our homeless community and their pets on
an on going basis -- sidewalk-to-sidewalk service (like door-to-
door!). We can't tell you how much it means to those individuals who's
pets benefit from the food donations. You'll have to volunteer with us
one day to see the smile on their faces!
If you'd like to participate, simply put a box in your lobby with "Donate Dog and Cat Food" sign (click here to download this sign). Then, when you've collected some food, send an e-mail to dhoult@sfvet.org or call 305-397-8160 to schedule pick up of the food donations. It's that easy and makes a huge difference!
