  • Participating veterinary hospitals would be reimbursed $30.00 per cat neuter, $70.00 per cat spay, $50.00 per dog neuter, and $110.00 per dog spay, which includes a $10.00 per cat surgery and $20.00 per dog surgery co-payment by the public.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MADDIE’S FUND:

  1. What is Maddie’s Fund?  Maddie’s Fund is a non-profit organization founded by Dave Duffield (founder of PeopleSoft) which is dedicated to ending the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in United States animal shelters one community at a time.  Maddie’s Fund has set aside over $200 million to communities which can form collaborations of private practice veterinarians, animal shelters and pet adoption groups dedicated to achieving this goal.

  1. Who is eligible for grant money?  Veterinary hospitals will receive grant money for spays and neuters performed on qualified pets.  Maddie’s Fund will pay private practice veterinary hospitals $30 for a cat neuter, $50 for a dog neuter, $75 for a cat spay, and $120 for a dog spay.  In addition, the Medicaid clients may also be asked to pay a $10 co-pay for cats and a $20 co-pay for dogs.  Non-profit pet adoption groups will receive grant money based on their ability to adopt out increasing numbers of cats and dogs.  In general, Maddie’s Fund strictly limits governmental animal control agencies from receiving direct grant money because animal control agencies are dependent on taxpayer priorities which often include licensing, public health, animal regulation, law enforcement, and public safety.

  1. Who is eligible for the discounted spay and neuter surgeries?  Only pets of people who receive Medicaid assistance are eligible for the discounted surgeries.  Maddie’s Fund wants to help only those pet owners who truly need financial assistance, unlike other programs where people not needing assistance often abuse the program.  The majority of these pets would not be spayed/neutered without some sort of discounted surgery program.

  1. Why should my veterinary hospital participate in this grant?  Only communities which ensure collaboration among private practice veterinarians, pet adoption groups, and animal shelters are eligible for a multi-million dollar grant.  The pet adoption groups will not be eligible for a Maddie’s Fund grant unless they can enlist the support of at least 60% of the veterinary hospitals in Miami-Dade County.  There are ~100 veterinary hospitals in Miami-Dade County.  This means that at least ~60 veterinary hospitals would have to be willing to participate in order to even be eligible for a community grant.  Only 22 veterinary hospitals have signed up so far.

  1. Where does the program work?  Medicaid clients’ setup spay/neuter surgeries for their pets at their participating veterinary hospital.  Hospitals perform the surgeries exactly how they want; all Maddie’s Fund asks is that each hospital photocopies proof of Medicaid assistance and collects the $10 or $20 co-payment.

  1. How many surgeries must a participating veterinary hospital perform?  Each veterinary hospital can set their own limit on how many grant surgeries they perform each month.  It could be as few as 1 to 2 surgeries per month.

  1. When would this grant start?  It is not likely to start for at least 1-2 years.

  1. Who would be the lead agencies of a Maddie’s Fund grant in Miami-Dade County?  The SFVMA would likely be the lead agency of the spay/neuter component of the community grant.  The SFVMA would be responsible for administering the grant and ensuring that goals are achieved.  The SFVMA would receive money in order to properly administer the grant.  The Humane Society of Greater Miami would likely be the lead agency of the adoption component of the grant.
